For generations, Kazakh fishers have set out on to the frozen Ishim River in the hope of catching fish beneath the ice. The Ishim flows through the country’s capital, Astana, a high-rise, futuristic city that was built virtually from scratch in the 1990s, when the exploitation of Kazakhstan's oil reserves began. The city is intended to be an emblem of post-Soviet modernity and a hallmark of the country’s entrance into the global economy. On the ice, the fishermen brave temperatures that often reach forty degrees below zero. While they fish, they protect themselves from the harsh weather with salvaged pieces of plastic, patched together from discarded packaging or rice bags found outside markets selling western, Chinese and Russian goods. By looking at the appropriation of these imported materials and their subsidiary application, Kondratyev illuminates the material flow of global capitalism and its effect on local, nomadic practices. Tracking this flow reveals the point at which international trade policy meets individual lives.

Aleksey Kondratyev (b. 1993 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) received his BFA from Wayne State University in Detroit and is a current MFA candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kondratyev's work has been exhibited at the Neue Schule für Fotografie in Berlin; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome; Les Rencontres d'Arles; the Benaki Museum in Athens; and the Galleria Foto-Forum in Bolzano. His work has been published in theFinancial Times, CNN, Der Spiegel, the New York Times, Vogue, andNational Geographic. He lives in Los Angeles.

Ater the incredible success with Gerry Johansson’s Tokyo last year (the 500 edition was sold out in three months), I’ve been looking out for another project with the artist. For the new book America revised I’ve chosen 83 pictures from the big number of images, Gerry had taken in the span of more than 40 years during his travels to the States. Gerry Johansson purists who know, like and collect his mostly self published and tabloid sized books might be irritated by our large size 320 x 300 mm (12 3/5“ by 11 4/5“). And in addition there will be even a small number of color images included. But as the reproduction size has more or less the size of his prints, even those who have never seen an original print by Gerry Johansson, could get an almost lifelike impression of an exhibition by GJ. And this was one of my intentions when designing the book. Finally I’ll be sure that even the officially sworn in fans of Gerry Johansson will like the concept. And of course there will be special editions coming with the first copies of the book.

This is the latest of Donovan Wylie’s books with Steidl that explore the architecture of the Northern Ireland conflict. While Wylie’s earlier publications including British Watchtowers and Maze (on Belfast’s Maze prison) document disappearing military structures, Housing Plans for the Future focuses on the legacy of architectural containment in urban areas today.

Wylie took these photos during walks through a number of social-housing neighborhoods in inner-city Belfast, which look eerily similar. While the built environments at first appear benign, even mundane, sustained looking reveals how they purposely control vision and movement. Walls block vehicle access, houses are inverted to face away from neighboring communities and minimize potential antagonism, and excessive street lighting ensures visibility in what Wylie calls “a prison of sorts … a completely thought-through system of social control.” These defensive structures, built in the 1970s and ’80s and still populated today, are a powerful and largely unrecognized legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Anastasiia is a declaration of love from a Kyivan student to her foreign lover and her native land, Ukraine. Through parallel streams of documentary images, Skype screenshots and texts, a dialogue is reconstructed between Anastasiia and her lover, the photographer Christian van der Kooy. The book covers a period of two years in which Ukraine faced major changes.

Anastasiia’s report is above all an interpretation and exploration of her daily life and a reflection on security and warmth in times of annexation and confusing propaganda. The book describes, among other things, the ‘removal of communism’, such as the bringing down of Lenin’s statue in December 2013 and the manual scrubbing of the Maidan Square after the Revolution, but also National Women’s Day, Crimea just before the annexation, the relationship between religion and superstition.

Ukraine is considered to be subject to the Russian sphere of influence. Therefore, within the current Ukrainian discourse, there is an urgent need to capture a visible, understandable cultural identity that listens to the ideas of a younger generation. With Anastasiia, Van der Kooy tries to contribute to this. His depiction of Ukraine demonstrates the creative way the Ukrainian people deal with the current developments in Kyiv, Odessa and Crimea.

This renowned, life-affirming collaboration between artist Roy DeCarava and writer Langston Hughes honors in words and pictures what the authors saw, knew, and felt deeply about life in their city.

Hughes’s heart-warming description of Harlem in the late 1940s and early 1950s is seen through the eyes of one grandmother, Sister Mary Bradley. As she guides the reader through the lives of those around her, we imagine the babies born, families in struggle, children yet flourishing. We experience the sights and sounds of Harlem as seen through her learned and worldly eyes, expressed here through Hughes’s poetic prose. As she states, “I done got my feet caught in the sweet flypaper of life and I’ll be dogged if I want to get loose.” DeCarava’s photographs lay open a world of sense and feeling that begins with his perception and vision. The ruminations go beyond the limit of simple observation and contend with deeper meanings to reveal these individuals as subjects worthy of art. While Hughes states “We’ve had so many books about how bad life is, maybe it’s time to have one showing how good it is,” the photographs bring us back to this lively dialogue and a complex reality, to a resolution that stands with the optimism of the photographic medium and the certainty of DeCarava’s artistic moment.

In 1952 DeCarava became the first African American photographer to win a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. The one-year grant enabled DeCarava to focus full time on the photography he had been creating since the mid-1940s and to complete a project that would eventually result in The Sweet Flypaper of Life, a moving, photo-poetic work in the urban setting of Harlem. DeCarava compiled a set of images from which Hughes chose 141 and adeptly supplied a fictive narration, reflecting on life in that city-within-a-city. First published in 1955, the book, widely considered a classic of photographic visual literature, was reprinted by public demand several times. This fourth printing, the Heritage Edition, is the first authorized English-language edition since 1983 and includes an afterword by Sherry Turner DeCarava tracing the history and ongoing importance of this book.

Picture of We are Indestructible

Danish photographer Mads Nissen has documented the civil war in Colombia since 2010. More than 50 years of conflict between the government army, guerrilla rebels and paramilitary groups has led to the internal displacement of 7 million citizens, leaving visible scars on the landscape and people of Colombia. We are Indestructible is the culmination of Nissen’s work, providing a portrait of a war-torn country navigating the complexities of newfound peace.

The photographs in the book journey from the offices of President Juan Manuel Santos to the forest encampments of the FARC guerrilla, from lush mountain ranges to dangerous slums on the outskirts of Colombia’s larger cities where 95% of the population are the displaced. Colombia is the main producer of cocaine in the world, fuelled by demand from the US and Europe. The economics of this drug trade, intertwined with poverty and inequality, in a county with an ingrained history and culture of violence, has fed the cycle of unrest. Looking beyond the causation and politics, Nissen’s project presents a compelling picture of the main actors as well as the ordinary citizens whose daily lives are caught in the middle of the violence, cocaine production, guerrilla fighters and gang members. Amongst the photographs in the book are textual ‘voices’ representing those portrayed, copies of paramilitary-issued propaganda ‘death threats’ and botanical illustrations by Colombian artist Lisa Anzellini, depicting new species discovered in former conflict zones since access has been re-established. We are Indestructible provides a glimpse of the multi-layered seams of Colombia’s past, present and future.

The longest running civil war in recent history, which has left over 200,000 dead, grew out of partisan conflicts in the 1920s. By the 1960s, the conflict escalated into a complex civil war – pitting the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) against the Colombian Army and paramilitary groups often linked to drug cartels or domineering land owners. In 2010, Juan Manuel Santos was elected to the presidency and started secret negotiations with representatives of the FARC – yet when a final deal had been agreed upon, a referendum narrowly voted “No”. Santos went back to Havana to thrash out a new deal with the rebels and clinched an agreement that was unanimously approved by both houses of parliament in November 2016. In reality, this newfound peace was won on paper only and the coming years would show the true value of political accord when pitted against and the practicalities of reconciliation in a country with a deep-seated history of conflict.

Mads Nissen was born in Denmark in 1979 and graduated with distinction from The Danish School of Media and Journalism in 2007. After graduation, he moved to Shanghai to document the human and social consequences of China’s historic economic rise working for Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel and Stern amongst others.

In 2015, his photograph of a gay couple from Russia was selected as World Press Photo of the Year and his work has received more than 60 awards, in 2018 he was named ‘Photographer of the Year’ for the third time in Denmark. In 2016, he was commissioned by the Nobel Peace Center to photograph Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos and the country’s struggle for peace.

Alongside his long-term projects and exhibitions, he has worked for the Danish daily Politiken since 2014. Two monographs of his work have been published previously, AMAZONAS (2013) and The Fallen (2010). Nissen is represented by Panos Pictures in the UK; Prospekt in Italy and by Laif in Germany.

Photographic Treatment © consists of a series of five books, Daily Photo Dose 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, each with thirty black and white photographic diptychs collected and edited by Laurence Aëgerter.

Conducted in collaboration with neurologists, gerontologists and psychologists, the project aims to provide an image-based therapeutic tool to improve the well-being of senile dementia patients.

While dementia can’t be cured, the ways that we care for people with the disease can be improved, and that is what Aëgerter is seeking to do with this series. Brain stimulation is especially important for individuals suffering from the adverse effects of dementia, as it has proven to be helpful in slowing down the process of brain degeneration, according to the brain plasticity principle ‘Use It or Lose It’.

It is Aëgerter’s belief that pairing images is a powerful strategy to stimulate brain activity. The process of recognising connections between two images engages specific cognitive functions, involving associative creativity and fantasy. Photographic Treatment © also seeks to improve the well-being of individuals with dementia through the social interaction they have with their carers in the process of looking at the photographs and making connections. The series is an art project, but it was also a finalist for an innovation care award in the Netherlands, confirming its integration within specialised scientific criteria accepted by experts in the field of caregiving.

French artist, Laurence Aëgerter lives and works in Amsterdam and Marseille. Through projects that encompass public space, photography and artist’s books, Aëgerter examines what shapes our collective memory. Her work is in many major collections including Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles; MoMA and MET, New York; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; MAMAC, Nice; Fries Museum, Leeuwarden.

Over the course of multiple summers, Raymond Meeks has ventured the few miles from his rural home in the Catskill Mountain region of New York, to a single-lane bridge spanning the tributaries of Bowery and Catskill Creeks. Beneath the bridge, a waterfall drops sixty-feet over moss-covered limestone toward a forbidding pond. The local youth have come here from time immemorial, congregating near outcroppings and around a concrete altar – a remnant of an earlier stone bridge. Most allow themselves a brief running start before launching their pale bodies into the void, where tentative suggestions of flight mark the response to gravity. Taken collectively, their gestures allude to ritual, a prayerful response to the exigencies of budding sexuality and a future rife with uncertainty. Halfstory Halflife is a distillation of the photographs made in the shadows of these falls, marked each summer by the emergence of young adults perched at a precipice both in space and in their lives.

Raymond Meeks (b.1963 Ohio) lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York.His pictures have been exhibited at galleries including Fotomuseum Den Haag (Holland), Candace Dwan in New York and Camera Obscura in Paris.  His work is housed in public and private collections including the Bibliothèque Nationale (France), The National Gallery of Art, George Eastman House and the Museum of Modern Art Library.  He is the co-founder of Orchard Journal and Dumbsaint and the author of over twenty-four commercially and self-published books.  His most recent collaborative journal, Township, (along with Tim Carpenter, Adrianna Ault and Brad Zellar) was nominated for the 2018 International Photobook Award at Kassel. Meeks is represented by Wouter van Leeuwen in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
