Dear friend of Beyond Words,

For some time I had felt that the quality of photographic titles available in the remainder market had declined but I am happy to say the situation has improved markedly over the last few months. We are happy to bring you an excellent selection of remainders, either in stock or due to arrive soon.

American Landscape and Americana

Anxiety about landscape under threat from development is a significant theme in contemporary American landscape photography. Terry Falke’s Observations is a particular favourite of mine. It came out about the same time as Jeff Brouws’s superb Approaching Nowhere and perhaps suffered by comparison – I would say, without good reason, as it is a first-rate work. We also have Brouws’ loving and quirky collection of roadside detritus, Readymades.

Nature and the Environment

Sam Abell’s Seeing Gardens is an old favourite. Few of his ‘gardens’ would normally be recognised as such; they are elements of gardens he sees in the natural and human landscape. This is the first time the hardback has been available as a remainder. Antarctica is full of stunning colour images of this fragile environment. Wealth of Nature and Climate for Life are very weighty tomes combining colour photography with well-researched essays on environmental issues.

Miscellaneous

Illumine is an excellent collection of Fabian Miller’s cameraless photography. I’m surprised to see it as a remainder at all, and this is good value at £12.25. Arnold Odermatt was a Swiss police officer and photographer who belatedly came to prominence when his collection of photos of traffic accidents was published. Meine Welt combines the best of these with a more general retrospective. We are not quite sure why the ever-popular Redstone Diary should become available as a remainder so soon but we are happy to offer it at the ridiculous price of £5.25.

Alicia Bruce exhibition

Finally a plea that any of you in the vicinity of Findhorn should go and see Alicia’s exhibition of the Menie community north of Aberdeen, currently battling Donald Trump’s grandiose and destructive development of the area for the sake of more golf courses and luxury accommodation. Whatever your opinion of Alex Salmond, he needs to be taken to task for supporting this piece of nonsense.

See the Moray Art Centre website for more details or visit Alicia's website.
