Dear
friend of Beyond Words,
Welcome to another edition of the Beyond Words newsletter and one in
which we have some bad news tempered by some plans for the future.
We also have news of some eagerly awaited new releases. |

| Beyond
Words – The Shop Closes – The
Business Continues |
 |
| |
| The Bad News |
It
is with great regret we have to inform you that Beyond Words will not
be able to continue trading at its premises in Cockburn Street, Edinburgh. We really appreciate the support
our customers have given the shop since we opened in January 1998. Unfortunately
the book marketplace has changed enormously during that time and our
sales have been on a gradual downward slope for some years while rent,
rates and other costs have increased.
The
shop will be closing for good in mid-July. A closing-down sale
is already under way, with 20% or more off the majority of our titles. If
you want to continue to support Beyond Words, please come and take advantage
of the great reductions. |
| |
| The
Good News |
Despite
this undeniable bad news we want
to focus on the future and find ways of continuing to provide a service
to customers, old and new. Beyond Words will continue as a business,
customers will still be able to order books by phone and email and
via the website and a
monthly online e-newsletter will continue to be published.
By
reducing our costs, we hope to be able to offer a 10% discount across
the board to our customers and to offer carriage-free delivery, at
least to our Edinburgh customers. Other customers will continue
to benefit from the flat-rate courier rates we currently offer. We
also intend to build up a more detailed database of customers’ specific
photographic interests so that we can target information about new
titles more effectively.
If
you would like to contact us to make your own comments and suggestions
about how you would like to see Beyond Words develop, or if you have
specific requirements that we do not currently fulfill, we would be
very happy to hear from you.
Once
again, to everyone who has supported our Cockburn Street shop over the
years, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation and hope that we
can continue to offer you excellent service in the future. |

30 years this beautiful book has everything you would expect from

| Kenro Izu - A Thirty Year Retrospective |

| Josef Hoflehner |
 |
In
our last newsletter we alerted you to the imminent arrival of a
new book by Josef Hoflehner and a new expanded version of an old
favourite. The wait is now over as Unleashed
3 (Hardback, £50), Hoflehner's third
retrospective, and Iceland (Hardback, £50)
have now arrived. Unleashed
3 further demonstrates
Hoflehner's ability to bring a fresh approach to well known and much
photographed sites from around the world while anyone who saw his
original book Iceland will
not be disappointed to see more images added to this bestselling
volume. More than just the location of an inconvenient volcano,
Iceland also possesses a unique landscape and one that is ideally
suited to Hoflehner's visual style. |

| World Press
Photo '10 |
 |
Always
popular, reasonably priced and guarenteed to provoke an emotional
response, World
Press Photo '10 (Paperback, £14.95) collects together some
of the most haunting and inspiring photographs from 2009 – nearly
180 pictures submitted by photojournalists, picture agencies, newspapers
and magazines throughout the world. Publishing the results of the
most recent annual World Press Photo Contest, the photographs in
this exceptional book have been selected from more than 96,000 images
taken by over 5,000 photographers representing 124 countries and
capture the most powerful, moving and sometimes disturbing events
of the year. |

| Francesca Woodman |
 |
The
subject of two recent Edinburgh shows (at the Scottish National Gallery
of Modern Art and the Ingleby Gallery), the work of Francesca Woodman
is becoming increasing well known, many years after her tragic suicide.
With so little available for so long, Phaidon's massive retrospective
in 2006 was enthusiastically received. When this edition sold out
there was nervous anticipation to see how long we would have to wait
for such an exhaustive retrospective of Woodman's work. Fortunately,
Phaidon have now brought this wait to an end with this
re-print
(Hardback, £45) of what must be the essential volume of Woodman's
photographs. |

| William
Eggleston - Democratic Camera |
 |
It
may seem absurd in a month when we announce the closure of our Cockburn
Street shop, but in the last few years the value
of photographic books has increased dramatically.
Often no sooner has a quality title gone out of print than copies
begin exchanging hands online for vastly inflated prices. In such
a climate, that book that you always meant to buy but never got around
to can suddenly become unobtainable without breaking the bank. It
is therefore always handy to have advance warning and so we bring
you the news that Democratic
Camera, the impressive
retrospective of William Eggleston's work, is now selling online
for £95
a copy. We however have a number of copies in stock at the publisher's
price of £35. To make sure of your copy either phone the shop
or order online. |
|
| |
| As
always if you would like to order any of the titles listed or would like
more information concerning anything mentioned in our newsletters please
contact us by phone or at the email address at the bottom of this message.
You may also order any of these books at www.beyondwords.co.uk. |
