Dear friend of Beyond Words,

Welcome to another edition of the Beyond Words newsletter in which we remind you about our party and take care of some admin regarding our new incarnation. We also bring your attention to some new photographic titles and our 10% discount offer on all books.

Shop Closure & Party
Our Cockburn Street shop's final day of trading will be Friday 16 July.  There will be a celebration the previous evening, Thursday 15, from 6 pm onwards.  Please come if you can.  Thanks for coming in in such numbers to support the closing down sale.  Thanks also for the kind comments from many customers and the positive response to the proposal that we should continue to trade by other means.

Discount on All Orders

With immediate effect, all new titles ordered by phone, email or through the website will be sold at 10% off the recommended price.  Titles newly uploaded onto the website show the discount.  Older titles will not show the discount but the discount will be applied by us when your card payment is put through.

New Titles

Mark Power: The Sound of Two Songs
Photoworks, Hardback, Publisher's Price £30, Our Price £27

Mark Power is perhaps still best known for his early monochrome work The Shipping Forecast. But most of his later work has been in colour, on the borders between landscape and documentary. I believe his exploration of Poland in The Sound of Two Songs is his finest work yet. Most of the images can be viewed on his own site:

http://www.markpower.co.uk/index.cfm?p=10321

The book has been carefully sequenced and beautifully printed and – I can only assume – substantially subsidised to be available at this price.

Henk van Rensbergen: Abandoned Places 2
Lannoo Publishing, Paperback, Publisher's price £30, Our Price £27

Images of industrial and architectural decay seem to be very much in vogue and van Rensbergen’s first volume was a fine example of the genre.  It went rapidly out of print and the second volume should sell well.  I found his website a bit confusing but it gives you a flavour:

Todd Hido: A Road Divided
Nazraeli Press, Publisher's price £50, Our Price £45

A Road Divided has arrived at last.  It has been well worth the wait.  If anything it’s even more beautiful than Roaming, the work it most closely resembles  It is however in a much larger format than Roaming – 14” by 17”. In these new pictures, Hido demonstrates his fluidity within the daytime realm, putting aside the harder edge that characterizes his night work by photographing through veils of rain or ice.  Some of the images can be viewed at

Helios - Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change
Tate Publishing , Publisher's price £29.99, Our Price £27
This handsomely produced book coincides with what is, quite unbelievably for such an important photographer, the first major retrospective of Muybridge's work. The exhibition is currently coming to the end of its run at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC before heading to the UK where it will undoubtedly be one of the must-see shows of the year when it opens at Tate Britain in September. The influence of Muybridge on art, photography, cinema and science has been immense and with this volume he finally has a book worthy of his work.

Michael Kenna: Venezia
Nazraeli Press, Publisher's price £50, Our Price £45
Michael Kenna's new book Venezia has now arrived in its luxurious slipcase. Containing photographs taken over a period of 30 years, this beautiful book has everything you would expect from a Michael Kenna book and from Nazraeli Press, whose reputation for elegance and care is very well deserved. The regular edition (if such a term can be applied to a Nazraeli Press book) is available now (£50) and special editions are due soon.
