Dear friend of Beyond Words,

As promised, here’s our second special issue featuring recommendations from one of our favourite publishers. The following is contributed by Markus Hartmann, Publishing Director of Hatje Cantz.

'Hatje Cantz has only been seriously active in publishing photography books since the late 1990's. Previously photography was not so much of our focus as it is now. In 2011 we are likely to publish about 50-60 books that I would count under photography. If you try to describe our programme I would call it "looking for the unseen" and always trying to publish what we ourselves would like to buy and collect as books.

My first and main question to myself when making decisions on whether or not to publish a book is always whether I would buy such a book and whether I think that I am not the only one who is interested (which occasionaly could happen and has happened, unfortunately).

Modern, untypical and not "touristy" landscape seems to be a steady theme in our programme but also the environment combined with landscapes and, more generally, photography that tries to capture a spirit in our time is interesting for us. Sheer beauty is usually not enough (but does not hurt, I admit). What we do not do at all is any kind of Life Style and very little Fashion photography.  My favourite books in our programme are usually the current ones but I'd like to recommend some older ones as well (I only list the ones that are still available as of today to keep the level of frustration among bookbuyers low!).'

Nadav Kander: Yangtze
Hatje Cantz, Hardback, Publisher's Price £55.00, Our Price £49.50

'Nadav Kander: Yangtze (because he shows us beauty and disaster of China at the same time).' [Please note, Beyond Words has signed copies. If you order this book, we will assume you want a signed copy unless you tell us otherwise – no extra charge.]

Migropolis - Venice / Atlas of a Global Situation
Hatje Cantz, Publisher's Price £60.00, Our Price £54.00

'Migropolis by Wolfgang Scheppe and his class at the IUAV, Venice (even though this is not really a photobook as such).'

“It doesn’t seem possible that a single book could create a complete cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic profile of a city, but ‘Migropolis: Venice/Atlas of a Global Situation’ does just that, in a comprehensive, complex, and beautiful way.” from Modern Painters

Sam Shaw
Hatje Cantz, Publisher's Price £45.00, Our Price £40.50

'I have never seen Marilyn Monroe so natural but also all his other works in the US in the 50's and 60's deserve a look.'

"The amiably spontaneous pictures taken by Sam Shaw (1912–1999) are well known: the native and life-long New Yorker shot countless cover photographs for Life and Look in the fifties and sixties, and later also took the still images for the films he produced himself. Shaw and Marilyn Monroe were friends, and he captured her unique aura in countless unpretentious portraits." from the website

Tobias Zielony: Story / No Story
Hatje Cantz, Publisher's Price £24.99, Our Price £22.49
'Tobias Zielony's intense images of the suburban youngsters, this book was one of the harder ones to do...'

"Tobias Zielony is one of the most remarkable young photographers active today. His work focuses on the issues of open and latent violence and explores the various forms of present-day (youth) revolts. Zielony is less interested in documenting the conditions under which young people live than in their self-portrayal. It is “this completely parenthetical form of social behavior” that is impressively presented in his work." from the website

Artists I really like and think that they are undervalued

'Zoltan Jokay (we published his Portraits in 2004 in a beautiful book but he still is very little known – out of print).

Tom Hunter, who is well known in the UK but not so much outside and we try to do another book with him for 2011. [Note, Tom Hunter’s Living in Hell is still available. £12.95 > £11.65].   The Ostkreuz Agency Photographers from Berlin that all do great work as an agency but also individually (see The City/Die Stadt and "Ostzeit" £35 > £31.50) and others...

Armin Linke is another photographer I would like to work with one day but he has not published so many books yet.'

Martin Parr books, especially The Last Resort and also Fascismo Abbandonato by Dan Dubowitz from Dewi Lewis, Carl de Keyser: Congo but we could not really have published this book, it had to be done by a Belgian publisher like Lannoo!'

Many thanks, Markus.  Our next newsletter will follow in about a week, hopefully in time for your Christmas decision-making.  One of the features will be your recommendations for Photo Books of the Year.  We’ve already had quite a few contributions but, if you’d like to add your own, please submit them by Thursday 2 December at the very latest.

As always if you would like to order any of the titles listed or would like more information concerning anything mentioned in our newsletters please contact us by phone or at the email address at the bottom of this message. You may also order any of these books at www.beyondwords.co.uk.
