Dear
Friend of Beyond Words,
Mose,
Stephen Shore’s book of photographs of
Venice, taken in 2008, is due out in May. You can be sure
that Shore will provide an antidote to the picture-postcard view.
Having
told various customers that Shore’s Road Trip
Journal was out of print, I am glad to be able to report
that Phaidon seem to have dug up some copies which are still
for sale at the original price (£125 > £112.50).
World Press Photo 2011 is
due to be published on 9 May. The death yesterday in Libya of Tim Hetherington,
the competition’s overall winner in 2007, reminds us of
the risks many photojournalists continue to work under.
Mack
Books have until now published books in collaboration with
Steidl but they have started a parallel independent imprint
and their list of forthcoming publications looks very impressive. The
first two, already published, titles are Broomberg & Chanarin’s People
in Trouble and Paul Graham’s Films, his eulogy
to the physical material of photography: film.
We
have started to import titles from the Japanese publisher Superlabo. They
specialise in small photographic books with a print run of
only 500 each. Among the first batch
were Japan by
Martin Parr and Redheads, a ‘remake’ of
the title by Joel Meyerowitz published in 1991.
Sadly it seems there is to be no English edition of Herve
Guibert: Photographien. Guibert was a major figure
in modern French culture, both as a writer and a photographer,
who died of AIDS in 1991. We are able to supply the German
edition from Schirmer Mosel.
Mario
Vidor is a widely published Italian photographer. The
Perfect Cloud brings together 56 photos of black-and-white
landscapes with clouds prominently featured. You can
view a selection here:

Joe
Cornish’s
popularity was demonstrated in a recent poll in which Scotland’s Mountains and Scotland’s
Coast were voted one and two in a poll to find the most
popular nature photography books of Scotland. On receiving
the award, Joe said:
"I
am amazed, gratified and delighted to find Scotland's
Mountains came out on top from such a wonderful collection
of books in the Scottish Nature Photography Book of the Year
Award. Contrary to the view that every prominent photographer
is a multi award winner, I have received no plaudit of this
kind before, and it really means a lot to me, especially as
it is the result of a popular vote, rather than a judging panel.
That Scotland's Coast came second was almost
overwhelming. I am grateful to everyone who voted, whether
for me or not, because the participation of all in a competition
of this kind adds weight to the cause of books, and is a reminder
in this electronic media-driven world that the pleasures and
consolations of the book remain unmatched. For artists who
wish to make a statement that will be subjected to the test
of time, books remain the principle format.”
Both
Scotland’s
Mountains and Scotland’s
Coast are available from us at our normal 10% discount. While
higher discounts may be available elsewhere, our copies will
be signed. We are also able to supply
copies of the limited hardback edition of A
Photographer at Work at £110. The edition of 100
is numbered and signed by Joe and by Eddie Ephraums. Each
slipcased book comes with two original, signed and numbered
prints, taken at Bamburgh, one by Joe Cornish, the other by
Eddie.
The
work of John Beatty will be known to many of our customers,
not least as editor and contributor to the John Muir Trust
diaries. He
has just published Wild
Vision, a retrospective of his
career in nature, travel and adventure photography. See
samples of the contents here: http://www.v-publishing.co.uk/titles/photography/wild-vision-in-celebration-of-the-natural-world.html
The
Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards will be announced during the Sony
World Photography Awards in London, 27 April 2011.Three
titles have been selected for this year’s award:
We
have been very happy to get stock of some out-of-print Nazraelis
including Rolfe Horn’s 28 Photographs, Jason
Langer’s Secret
City and Ron van Dongen’s Nudare (signed)
We were pleased to receive from one of our customers, Michael
Marten, a link to his blog in which he reviews a Thomas Ruff
book he had bought from us: http://tpdv.marten.org.uk/2011/03/30/series-wholes-and-parts-reading-and-re-reading-images-in-thomas-ruffs-schwarzwald-landschaft/
If any other customers are in the habit of blogging about photo
books, please do let us know.
We
have had very positive feedback from Douglas May on Kiyoshi
Suzuki’s Soul and Soul 1969-99. Douglas
writes: “Many thanks for delivering the book. It
is one of the very best of these Japanese photobooks-very tactile,
beautifully printed and intriguing photographs.”
If
you are looking for copies of last year’s much sought-after Mushroom
Collector by Jason Fulford, we now have copies in stock.
